live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning. welcome to a split edition of "today". i'm matt lauer where the opening ceremony will be held tonight. a look back over 1,000 years of russian history. in honor of that on a friday morning, we're starting 400 years ago with meredith vieira sitting next to me. >> all i can say is the stench of vodka. >> and we're off and running. >> yes. >> do we miss that. >> exactly. we are on air, guys. >> we knew the opening ceremony would have drama and tension. the gang is all here. what we want to know is russia ready to welcome the the world. >> they better be. 40,000 people getting in the

stadium is going to be a little awkward. they are still doing little funny things. you see them planting palm trees. the wrappers are still on them. >> still painting going on. but the opening ceremonies seems ready. >> yeah. a few little kinks. but it is so ambitious. if they pull it off it's going to be fantastic. we'll tell you more in just a little bit. >> more on that in a little while. more on the main event. competition has already begun, as you know. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, matt, good morning. you're in there. out here, details of the opening ceremony are leaking out. we're told there will be a map of the earth projected on the floor and athletes will walk out of their individual countries. to get things started it will be transferred to this giant cauldron out here in the park. >> whoo! usa! >> the completion of an epic journey. today the torch proudly carried

by gold medal hockey player. >> it's so cool just to be a part of this. >> reporter: the longest torch run in olympic history, from the arctic to outer space, even under water. tonight ushers in the biggest winter games ever. 3,000 athletes from 88 countries. and already an electric start to the competition with bode miller recording the fastest qualifying run in the men's downhill. >> today he is truly looking like a strong contender for sunday's race. >> reporter: while hannah carney ripped into the moguls course. and crashing during training ahead of the first qualification run thursday, she is now out of the olympics. within slopestyle got under way with australian sensation tora bright. and the pride of russia took to the ice yesterday, pashenko dazzled the crowds. but it was a difficult start for

the american team. jeremy abbott fell, hitting the boards. >> it's just a matter of continuing on and moving forward. >> reporter: pairs figure skaters flubbed their triple salchow. team u.s. currently in seventh place. and president putin shaking hands with hockey's finest. don't they will all gather at the largest american team in the history of the winter olympics. the 22nd winter games under way. and the tsa is saying it has banned liquids on flights to russia out of abundance of caution. we have seen some protests. small protests over the anti-gay laws. and a protest by a snowboarder who had a design on his board as being interpreted as a protest. and there is some controversy with people saying not many foreign visitors will be there

inside the stadium. but as you said, billions will be watching on television. if there's anything you ever wanted to do on television, tonight's the night. >> this wouldn't be the time, but thank you for the thought. by the way, on the subject of liquids on flights, when we flew to russia last week, we weren't loud to bring it on our carry-on luggage but we were in checked bags. apparently those are changing. we have something from the president you will see only on "today". the special message he recorded for team usa as they begin to walk in the opening ceremony. >> hello, team usa. i just want to say congratulations and good luck to everyone representing the red, white and blue at the winter olympics and paralympic games this year. we couldn't be prouder of you. we can't wait to see what you accomplish in the next few weeks. we are proud of everything you have done to get this far. you have worked tirelessly, practicing day after day for years to become some of the

finest athletes in the world. you excelled at the very highest levels of competition. bring out your "a" game when it matters most. competing with bigger and winning with grace. and you have dedicated yourself to the olympic values of friendship, respect, and excellence in your sport and in your lives. so you inspire us. we're going to be watching and we are going to be rooting for you. so on behalf of all your fans around the country, including everybody in the obama family, good luck and go team usa. >> president's message to team usa. by the way, nbc's bob costas got the chance to speak to the president, and they talked about the president's relationship with russia's vladimir putin. >> i think there's always going to be a balance where there are areas of mutual interests where we work together well, cooperate. it is a constructive relationship when i interact with mr. putin. but going to be times when we

have real differences. we tend to have pretty blunt conversations. i give credit for when we sit down and talk there's not a lot of beating around the bush or niceties. it's all business. i tell him where i strongly disagree with him and he does the same. >> probably shouldn't make too much of the fact that the president isn't attending these games. most presidents do not. jenna's dad, george bush, did go to beijing in 2008 for a coming out party for the chinese. but it's not all that unusual for a president not to travel to an olympic games. >> exactly. >> matt, i've got to tell you, you have set off a firestorm on this desk. because you said it might be changing that they cannot bring any liquids, moisturizers, makeup in check said bags. >> what? >> we have it all here. >> oh, no. >> we have it for you. >> i have seen matt's cosmetic

bag. it is quite large. >> o'dell on delta, no liquids in passenger cabins. so you can check it. you have no idea. >> you freaked us out. >> let's talk about the opening ceremony tonight. this is when matt and meredith are incredibly evasive. can you give us just in a word what we can expect tonight? >> spectacle. >> for sure. >> thanks for that. >> summer olympics opening ceremony, not winter. that's the scale that they were looking at. they looked at beijing rather than vancouver. this is the biggest country in the world. they think it needs to be big coming out of the box. >> are there any jaw-dropping, i can't believe they pulled that off moments?

>> no. yes. >> yes. >> there are. they've got a piece of equipment. i don't know whether i would call it a mechanical device or piece of technology that's built into the stadium. and if it is operating properly it is going to put on one heck of a show. if it's not operating properly, you will hear a lot about our summer vacations and things like that. >> matt, you have been studying 1,000 years of russian here. maybe you could regal everybody with that. >> we're lucky to have dave remnick. written extensively on russia. lived here for a while. so he is the go-to guy if that thing doesn't work. >> seriously, though, we have seen a few rehearsals. they have been doing a great job. this stated yum was custom built for this opening ceremony. that was never done before. >> we'll hear a lot more about it coming up, right, matt?

>> absolutely. we will have throughout the show. and meredith is going to take you to meet one of the creativity forces behind the show. of course we want you to watch the opening ceremony tonight at 7:30, 6:30 central time right here on nbc. savannah, i want to say one more thing. there is a piece that starts the show at 7:30 that sets up the olympic games in russia. watch it. it's fantastic. >> oh, i will. chill bumps kind of thing. >> three words, putin jet pack. >> meantime, guys, we have a big story here at home. hundreds of thousands of people still in the dark from the winter storm earlier this week. natalie has been following that. >> this has been a grueling week. utility crews still busy trying to turn the powerback on for half a million customers after this week's ice storm here in the east. but they're not getting much help from mother nature. freezing cold weather is hanging on in the mid atlantic states. some areas may get hit with more snow this weekend.

hundreds of thousands of customers are still without power. mostly in pennsylvania. al will detail your forecast in just a little bit. >> call it bad timing, just as the olympic games opening ceremony getting under way. a brew that that between the united states and russia. the u.s. is suggesting that russia is responsible for eavesdropping on a top u.s. diplomat official conversations. nbc's andrea mitchell has more. >> reporter: the target of the electronic snooping is victoria nuland, handing out bread to anti-government protesters in the ukraine. they may have gotten even. the audio of her private conversation with the u.s. ambassador to ukraine was posted on youtube. and quickly tweeted by russia's government. in the call, nuland used the "f" word to dismiss inaction on the ukraine crisis by the european union, the eu. >> [ bleep ] the eu.

>> so who bugged nuland's call? >> the video was first noted and tweeted by the russian government i think it says something about russia's role. >> reporter: russian tv news suggests nuland was meddling in their affairs. one report referred to her as hillary clinton. nuland was clinton spokeswoman at the state department before john kerry promoted her to top u.s. diplomat in europe. >> we can't stop working to find areas where we can bring russia to the table. now it could be a lot harder for her to do her job. >> this is a new low in russian trade craft. >> reporter: and more tension with russia in time for the opening ceremonies. andrea mitchell, nbc news, washington >> unemployment in january, added 113,000 jobs in january. still, more people did begin looking for work. and the january unemployment

rate fell 0.1 to 6.6%, the lowest since october 2008. hiring was strong in construction, manufacturing and mining. and if you think you're tired of all the cold and snow, wait until you see this. this is surveillance from outside a brooklyn auto dealership. walking on the sidewalk when bam! the snowplow driving from the opposite direction blasts him with snow and ice, knocks him to the ground, as you saw there. they found their glass door smashed in and snow inside the showroom the next morning. having been splashed on. >> you could get hurt with that. there's a lot of debris getting thrown up. >> that was snow and ice and snow and ice on top. >> he's going to have snow he didn't know snow had places. >> with that note, i'll be moving on now. hey, we are finally, finally seeing some help for our friends out west with the drought.

winter storm watchings, winter weather advisories. you can see all this moisture making its way into the pacific northwest, northern california. we basically call this a pineapple express. a lot of moisture that emanates from the hawaiian islands. a tropical moisture plume makes its way into california and the pacific northwest. this is really needed stuff. it's going to continue right along through the weekend, bringing heavy rain. and the good news, mountain snow to the snowpack. it is in a sense the reservoir for the west. it's going to keep coming in. it's been over a year since san francisco saw more than san inch of rain for the month. so look at this. this is great news for them. it won't end the drought but it will help. six inches between san francisco and eureka. look in the sierra. we are talking up to four feet of snow. that is terrific news.

jay leno leaves a late night legend. >> i bid you a heartfelt good night. >> he took over in 1992, for more than two decades, he made america laugh. >> what country was the vietnam war for? >> korea. >> i can't do this anymore. >> what the hell were you thinking? >> now at age 63, leno steps aside for 39-year-old jimmy fallon. the show may be over, but leno says he won't stop performing. he'll continue to do stand-up. and he's had offers from other networks. but he says he's done with late night. but first, his good-bye. >> this has been the greatest 22 years of my life. and i got to work with -- and just all kinds of talented people who make me look a lot smarter than i really am. and in closing, i want to quote johnny carson who was the greatest guy to ever do this

a very good morning to you. 7:26. i'm laura garcia-cannon. san jose police looking for a stabbing suspect that happened outside the marriott hotel near the corner of san carlos and south market street. the man was stabbed at least once around 3:00 this morning. he was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. no arrests have been made. police say the suspect does know the victim. it happened about a block away from where a man was stabbed to death yesterday morning near the fairmont. police look for a man who got away after robbing a wells fargo. investigators say the man in his 20s or 30s handed an employee a note demanding money. the employee complied. police searched. it happened yesterday at the

wells fargo branch close to city hall. witnesses told police the man is between 5'10" and 6'1". meteorologist christina loren has a look at the forecast. >> a lot of heavy rain fall. good morning to you. happy friday. look at what's on the way to the bay area. as of this morning you can see right now spotty activity. over the greater bay area. it's organizing and it's moving in quickly. so by the time we hit about 11:00 a.m. most of this green will be widespread. i want to make sure you're ready for what's coming in this weekend. temperatures today are going to ramp up in the low 50s into the upper 50s so you need your co. grab that umbrella. as you head throughout the evening commute, heavy downpours and really watching out for your saturday. that looks like when we will see the worst of it. we'll keep you updated. here is mike. >> a slow drive for north 880 past the coliseum. moving better now. we had a ladder in lanes and a

biggest show the world has ever seen. >> you would think for a project as big as the olympics in sochi, russia, all of this happening some place else and not in a studio in the heart of new york city. >> look, in terms of design, we've produced a lot of things here in the studio. this is more than just the design. it's a huge collaboration of many different specialists from all over the world. >> reporter: he's always had a knack for bringing his imagination to life. the man behind the curtain has designed some of the world's biggest productions. >> i've done shows, but this is something else. truly mind boggling. and comes to create the biggest show ever.

because they say, we're a big country, we have to do it. every time i arrive in sochi, and i see the things we discussed actually happening in this enormous scale. and you feel, are you serious? are you actually doing this? it's just an idea i had in the middle of the night. and it's actually happening. >> and we have the chance to talk to george a couple of days ago, and he fully admitted he's nervous but only has to get it right once. >> and he's been short on time. they only got in here really about a month ago. >> exactly. it's a very complex show they're going to put on. >> let's bring in two members of team usa taking part in the ceremony. snowboarders jamie anderson and karlie snow. both qualified in the slopestyle event. ladies, good morning, and congratulations.

>> good morning. >> morning. >> please don't take this the wrong way. but you went out for a short time yesterday, and you're already in the finals. that sounds almost too easy. >> it wasn't that easy. but we definitely stoked we landed our run. and one less event to worry about. being at the finals feels nice. it was a long day yesterday. >> is it going to feel like a long wait over the weekend until you get back out there again? >> definitely, yeah. we're excited. the weather here has been absolutely beautiful. the course has been a little bit challenging and getting better every day. and we're snowboarding. we love it. >> things go by pretty fast in the olympic athlete village. >> i can imagine. >> i don't think it will take too long. >> jamie, you went to vancouver not as an athlete, but a spectator.

i just want to mention in the lead-up to these games, you have won just about everything. the x games, the u.s. open, the world cup, the list goes on and on, people are thinking you're one of the favorites for a gold medal here. would you like to add that to your resume? >> i would love to. but i'm trying to just enjoy the moment. you know, it's a lot of pressure and a lot of hype. so just taking it moment by moment and being grateful to even be here and have a healthy body, doing what i love and enjoying the journey. >> and any lucky charms you brought with you? anything you do for luck before a competition? >> my mom gave me this. it's jade from new zealand. and went there this summer for the new zealand winter games and it was kind of like a warm-up for this whole season. and it was so amazing and i learned so much out there.

life. who owns this slave? >> i do, senator. >> then i suggest you punish it and remove it. 15 lashes should suffice. after all, mercy is a virtue. >> kiefer sutherland, good morning to you. >> how are you? >> you're a really bad, bad, bad guy in this movie. was that fun? >> it was kind of fun. this is such a classic film in this kind of genre and nature. and the good people were good and the bad people were bad. and there's no kind of gray area. and for an actor, that's a fantastic thing to be able to play. and the dialogue was just so rich, and it was so beautifully written that i had an awful lot of fun. >> i knew that was part of what drew you to the role, as i understand it, you were a little bit skeptical. when you saw this movie, you didn't think this was a kiefer sutherland movie? >> it was described to me poorly. it was an action movie that kind of runs into a disaster film. and that -- at that moment didn't sound that appealing to me.

i said, well, i don't think that's what i want to do right now. and some people talked to me and said trust me, you should read it. and i did. the story was so beautifully written. all the characters were unbelievably well developed. and i was very lucky and kind of changed my mind quickly. >> the movie doesn't forget the story but it also doesn't skimp on the effects. the production values are amazing. >> i've done "24" for eight years, and so it's been a long time since i've done a film that was this big. this is a big $100 million movie. and it looks every penny of it. that was a real different process for me. on "24" we're shooting very fast and making the equivalent of 12 films a year. we did this two-hour movie almost over the same amount of time. but visually, it's stunning. and it's also a piece of history that i think is actually really timely. i think in the last ten years between tsunamis and

earthquakes, we've really come to terms with mother nature and her power and certainly the eruption of that volcano and the disruption of that society is something that kind of will bend your ear. >> it will. now, you mentioned "24," i'm glad, because i was going to bring it up. your viewers and fans are delighted it's coming back. and i think people were surprised by that. what made you decide to do another run of shows? >> i was surprised by it, too. howard gordon, our lead writer and has always been on "24" had great success with a show called "homeland." and he called me up one day and said i've got this idea for 12 episodes of "24," would you be interested? i said why don't you just do them for "homeland?" and he said no, this is for "24." and i've had such a great time making that show. the character is something i loved playing. and to be able to shoot it in england, which we're doing these

back now at 8:42. as we mentioned, today is national wear red day. a day to raise heart awareness for women. and there's surprising information when it comes to women and blood pressure. and we have heart healthy advice for us this morning. dr. norella good morning. >> good morning. >> all here. you're going to participate and get your blood pressure taken here in a moment. let me get to important information we learned about yesterday. the american heart association came out with important facts for women to know about when it comes to heart disease and to be aware of high blood pressure. what should we know? >> these new stroke guidelines presented. it's really great they came out during heart month. they emphasize the fact that

heart and cardiovascular disease is not just about heart disease but the vessel to the brain and stroke. stroke is the third leading cause of death for women in this country. it affects more women than men. the guidelines emphasize that high blood pressure is the most easily reversible risk factor for stroke. and women over 75 are at higher risk, women over 55. the older you get, the more likely you are to develop hypertension. >> and women have to be concerned with it years later, as well. >> that's right. there are specific conditions like childbirth and hormonal status that can increase your risk of stroke. >> let's get to our ladies here. and as we start with the nurses here helping us take our blood pressure. you feeling calm, savannah? >> yes. very zen. >> you're very zen right now. >> how do we know we're in range? >> so normal blood pressure is less than 120 over 80. >> how often should women be

out west on the weather channel, we're talking winter storm watches, winter weather advisories, some folks in that area picking up up to a foot of snow. and there's more on the way. why? we're starting to see a set-up in what we call the pineapple express. a plume of moisture that sets up, originates around hawaii. and that tropical moisture plume makes its way all the way to the west coast. and as it continues, you're going to see that rain just continue to move in. and in the upper elevations, we're going to be looking at a lot of snow. now, the good news is, they have had a horrible drought. san francisco, it's been a year and a month since they've had an inch of rain for a month. they're going to pick up about seven times that in the next 72 hours. and even better news in the sierra where they have the snow pack. they need it, they have almost no snow right now. the good news is, they're going to be picking up to 4 feet of snow in some spots and rain between eureka and san francisco.

scallions and the onions can be hidden as far as being in steaks and sauces. >> be careful. >> other things where you might not know they're there. >> if your dog ingests any of these items, avocado, medication, what should you do? >> anything you know they've ingested, the first thing to do is if you have something in the house, something as simple as hydrogen peroxide, a small dog can -- you can make the dog drink a little bit. >> how do you do that? >> either with a little oral syringe and let them drink slowly at about one teaspoon for about a five-pound dog. you can also pour a little peroxide, mix it with a little bit of, like, oatmeal or little baby food so the dog will eat it, something they'll ingest. there is also capsules that you can give and the dosages on the bottle. or you can get to the veterinarian and they can provide something that will make the animal vomit.

>> if they throw up, does that mean it's fine and you don't have to go to the vet? >> depending what it is they've eaten. they all have different toxic y toxicities and the vet will be able to tell what needs to be done. >> this is something you had, your dog was choking on something. >> bambino, i gave hmm a little treat, it was just not going down. i could tell he was doing -- >> the biggest thing with choking is prevention. that's the most important thing, keeping things around the house that they're going to be able to swallow like little balls or socks, try to pick those things up, good lesson for children anyway. but if the animal is choking, and you notice that something is either lodged in their mouth, first thing to do, don't try to get it out of the mouth. if you enter into the dog's mouth, the reflex to the dog is to close the mouth and the person gets bitten. that's no good. if the dog is choking, to get the dog up and allowing gravity to kind of work with it.

nbc. we are coming on the air to update you on something of a drama that was taking place during the opening ceremonies as they happened in realtime in russia tonight. an airliner has put down in turkey after a hijacker made himself known to the captain and crew, threatening, saying he had a bomb on board. that much has never been proven. there are reports that he has been subdued. the plan was landed at the less than primary airport in turkey and after some drama on the ground, again, there are reports that it has been subdued. but this entire region is on a hair trigger today and tonight with the start of the winter games. richard enle part of our team covering the winter olympics is outside the main stadium here in sochi tonight. richard, what else do we know about this? >> according to turkish

officials this plane left from the ukraine. it left from the city of kharkov. it was originally destined to go to istanbul but a passenger sitting in seat 2f, 110 passengers on board said to the crew and pilot that there was a bomb on the flight. the pilots appear to be quite calm in this situation. they didn't resist. they told this attempted hija hijacker that they would comply with his demands. the hijacker said he wanted the flight diverted to sochi. at that stage the pilot said, no problem. they were complying. but they didn't divert to sochi. instead, they continued on to istanbul. as soon as they entered turk irairspace they tripped an alarm saying there was an hijacking situation under way. two f-16 fighter jets were scrambled. they escorted the plane as it landed in the airport where it was originally destined to go on the asian side in istanbul. once it was on the ground, it was quickly surrounded by
